Poverty & Hunger
Poverty and hunger are very pressing issues in Ethiopia. Many children that are of school age are not even in school because they are forced in to child labor, child trafficking, and even child prostitution. Ethiopia is one of the world's poorest countries. The poverty is more pronounced in rural areas as opposed to urban areas. Out of the population of 80 million people, 35 million of them live in extreme poverty. Living in poverty also brings about the lack of food. 12 million people are chronically or at least periodically insecure of food. A staggering 80% of Ethiopians depend on agriculture for their income, although severe conditions due to rainfall together with civil disputes have worsened Ethiopian poverty. Climate change also plays a role in poverty for Ethiopia. Having suffered droughts that have contributed to hunger and famine in the past, climate changes will make the lives of the poorest even more difficult. On top of that the HIV/AIDS pandemic is driving poor people into even deeper poverty by depriving families of young adults who are their most productive members.
